Custom magnetic gift box MOQs exist because setup costs (dies, plates, foil blocks, machine changeovers) are the same whether you order 300 or 3,000 boxes, so small runs cost more per box. You can lower your minimum by using a standard box size, limiting print colors, putting one box design across multiple products, using foil on colored paper instead of full printing, or choosing a collapsible magnetic box that’s cheaper to ship in small quantities.
This guide is written by PackPro (packpropkg.com), a factory-direct manufacturer of magnetic, rigid and collapsible gift boxes in Dongguan, China. Our standard MOQ starts from 1,000 units per design. Below is how brands make smaller budgets work.
Signs MOQ is holding your brand back
- You need 300–800 boxes, but suppliers quote 2,000+ minimum
- Small-run quotes are so expensive per box that they kill your margin
- You have several products and can’t afford separate packaging for each
- You’re launching and don’t want to hold a year of box stock
Why magnetic boxes have minimums
| Setup cost | What it is | How to reduce it |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting die | Custom tool for your box size | Use an existing standard size |
| Printing plates | One per color | Fewer colors, or foil only |
| Foil / emboss block | Metal block for your logo | Reuse one logo block across SKUs |
| Machine setup | Changeover and test sheets | Combine SKUs in one run |
| Magnets and materials | Bought in bulk lots | Standard magnet size and paper |
6 ways to order magnetic boxes in smaller quantities
1. Choose a standard size
If an existing die fits your product, you skip the custom die cost. A fitted insert can make a standard box hold your product perfectly.
2. Use colored paper plus a foil logo

Instead of full-color printing, wrap the box in a pre-colored specialty paper (black, white, kraft, navy, pastel) and hot-foil your logo. It looks premium, removes printing plates entirely, and is one of the most cost-efficient luxury looks.
3. One box, many products

Design one branded magnetic box and use a different insert, sticker or belly band per product. You order one large run instead of several small ones.
4. Keep artwork to 1–2 colors
Each extra ink adds a plate and setup. Minimal designs are cheaper and often look more premium.
5. Order to a full carton or pallet
Ask how many boxes fill a master carton or pallet. Rounding up slightly can lower the per-unit freight a lot.
6. Go collapsible for small runs
Collapsible magnetic boxes ship flat with roughly 70% less volume. On small orders, where freight is a big share of landed cost, that saving matters even more. It also makes air freight realistic, so you can order less and reorder faster.
What small-run pricing really looks like
Per-unit price drops as quantity rises because setup costs are spread across more boxes. As a rule of thumb, moving from the minimum to two or three times the minimum lowers the unit price noticeably. Past roughly 5,000–10,000 units, savings flatten out. Ask any supplier for price breaks at 1,000 / 3,000 / 5,000 so you can see the curve. See our 2026 packaging pricing guide for typical ranges.
Before you accept a low-MOQ quote
- Check the board thickness. Low-MOQ suppliers often use thinner greyboard
- Check that magnets are embedded in both lid and base, not glued on top
- Ask whether it’s made in their factory or sent to a subcontractor, and whether the factory holds a social audit such as amfori BSCI
- Always get a physical sample first. See our sampling guide

FAQ
What is the minimum order for custom magnetic gift boxes?
Many factories start around 1,000 units per design. PackPro’s standard MOQ starts from 1,000 units, and some suppliers offer lower runs at a higher unit price.
How can I lower my packaging MOQ?
Use a standard size, colored paper with a foil logo instead of full printing, fewer print colors, one box design across multiple products, and order to full cartons.
Why are small packaging orders more expensive per box?
Setup costs like dies, plates, foil blocks and machine changeovers are fixed per run, so they’re spread across fewer boxes on small orders.
Are collapsible magnetic boxes good for small orders?
Yes. They ship flat with roughly 70% less volume, which lowers freight cost per box. That matters most on small orders, and it makes faster air-freight reorders realistic.
